Meet The Instructor
Founder: Jamila Madyun
Jamila Madyun, a native of the Washington, DC area, was introduced to sewing by observing a childhood babysitter. At the age of 8, Jamila took her first sewing class and quickly grasped the new skill. Even though she was amongst classmates 2 to 3 times her age, it was apparent she had a special talent for making something out of nothing. She grasped skills so quickly that if she learned how to make a button up blouse in one class, she returned to the next class with multiple finished blouses.
Once she realized her artistry could become more than just a hobby, she decided to pursue it as her career. Jamila went on to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. After graduating, Jamila moved to New York to work alongside designer Tracy Reese’s Technical Design Team. Madyun also worked at Saks Fifth Avenue as a Lead Visual Stylist for 5 years. This experience exposed her to the vastness of the fashion industry.
After her stent in NYC, Jamila returned to her hometown of Ft. Washington, MD to continue sowing her passion for fashion and design. Stitched With Style was founded in 2014, specializing in the development of aspiring designers and sewing enthusiasts. Since 2014, Stitched With Style has provided over 500 hours of sewing courses to underserved youth and adults of all skill levels. In order to develop well-rounded designers, students learn fashion sewing, illustration design, pattern making, and the art of draping on a form.
Madyun defines herself as a technical designer who focuses on achieving tailored silhouettes. Although her designs are classic and ageless, her favorite fabrics have vibrant colors and intricate patterns. For Jamila, sewing and fashion design is more than just a handy skill, but a tool with the potential to cultivate life skills and reap positive ideals. She continues to reinvent her design aesthetic and hone her skills through commissioned work for clients of all shapes, sizes, and ages.
